RSAS

The Remote School Attendance Strategy (RSAS) is about working together with schools, families, parents and community organisations to ensure all children go to school every day.

The RSAS commenced 3rd Term 2014 and since commencing the school attendance has improved as follows:

  • End of 2014 – 64% (2014 was 6 months)
  • End of 2015 – 67% (2015 was full calendar year)
  • Currently – 68.3%
  • The school attendance appears to be increasing at approx. 2% each year

WNAC is the responsible agency for implementing the RSAS within Derby, becoming actively involved in the program in late 2014. WNAC delivers the RSAS to the Derby Town, Nuytsia Way, Reserve, Backstreets, Mowanjum and Padanus Park communities. In the short time WNAC has started delivering the program, attendance at the Derby District High School has increased by up to 7%. The RSAS programs delivered by WNAC are achieving national targets on school attendance.

Under the management of David D’Antoine, the WNAC team includes 4 School Engagement Supervisors looking after 14 School Engagement Officers. The School engagement teams work with the school and other agencies to help parents and families make sure kids have what they need to go back to school each day. The staff are all local people living in the Derby community.

The RSAS is delivered through the following methods:

  • Working with families where children are not attending school to find out why and what can be done to lift poor attendance rates.
  • Providing practical support like transport to school, assistance with school lunches and uniforms.
  • Working with the school to monitor attendance and follow up on student absences.
  • Celebrate and reward improved attendance.
  • All supervisors and attendance officers have working with children checks and police clearances, and participate in work-related learning activities.

For further assistance please don’t hesitate to contact the RSAS team on 9191 1527 or drop in to the office at 145 Loch Street, Derby.
